The Changing Architecture of Westminster Through the Ages
In this project I have attempted to show the progression of architecture and style by referencing the constituent buildings that formed Westminster and constructing an artistic representation of said influences. To show the passing of time, I have utilized a 2 point linear perspective, with the newest building (Westminster) at the forefront, flanked on both sides by the older buildings. I have played with color, showing the newest building with gaudy, bright colors, and fading the other buildings’ colors into neutral tones. Utilizing multiple layers gives the composition a sense of depth and passing of time: the background of the painting features collaged, roughly cut sections of textured paper. This is to simulate the grainy, evanescent nature of the “sands of time.” The vehicles and people visible in the street are distinctly different in color, style, and visibility, in the hopes of further promoting temporal symbolism.
