For my piece, I decided to focus on the life of Dr. Pressly. As I began my research, I read about Dr. Pressly, his vision for Westminster, his life, and how he developed his ideas and experiences into the school we know today. He was a very inspiring man, and his morals and convictions gave Westminster its current reputation and standards. I was inspired to see the man who founded the school, and see his life and how he started Westminster. Because of that, I wanted to use my art piece to honor him. The piece shows his personal journey through time in one place, the school. With each layer, I made changes to him and to a column representing the school. I added shadows to the column and wrinkles to his face, showing his personal connection to the school as they aged together. He was such an integral part of the school that I liked the idea of them aging and changing and growing simultaneously. I wanted to use my art to honor Dr. Pressly and show the development of our school through our founder.

    Proposal
I decided to focus my piece on plants/trees native to georgia in the present, near future, and far future, basing the far future (third layer) on the video we watched in class on what the world would look life if humans became extinct. I want to explore the questions surrounding this very abstract topic such as the most obvious: What would the world (or, in our case, Atlanta) look like without humans? Beginning with the first layer, I am using symbols of Atlanta and Georgia to build on this sense of place in hopes of being able to communicate a mix of the technology and current events of today (or the near future) and the natural aspects Georgia is proud of (peaches, moss trees). I feel that the mix of newspaper and nature (moss trees) communicates through irony the reality of one of our main news sources being produced from trees. This connection between the need to have constant information about the events around us and the desire to preserve the natural world is a drastic contrast when you begin to think of the millions of tons of paper used every year, for school, work, and, as in my piece, news. The moss of the trees in the second layer also signifies the beginning of an exponential and wild growth of the plants if humans no longer were inhabiting earth. There would definitely be more trees, vines, etc. than there are (around Atlanta/Georgia) today, but in a more raw, untamed sense. Through my piece, I hope to explore these topics and answer other questions that come up when researching or simply thinking about a. what the world would be like without humans, and b. what the significance of our connection to the natural vs. unnatural is overall.

The Changing Architecture of Westminster Through the Ages
In this project I have attempted to show the progression of architecture and style by referencing the constituent buildings that formed Westminster and constructing an artistic representation of said influences. To show the passing of time, I have utilized a 2 point linear perspective, with the newest building (Westminster) at the forefront, flanked on both sides by the older buildings. I have played with color, showing the newest building with gaudy, bright colors, and fading the other buildings’ colors into neutral tones. Utilizing multiple layers gives the composition a sense of depth and passing of time: the background of the painting features collaged, roughly cut sections of textured paper. This is to simulate the grainy, evanescent nature of the “sands of time.” The vehicles and people visible in the street are distinctly different in color, style, and visibility, in the hopes of further promoting temporal symbolism.
